Big Changes and Challenges Ahead in “Markets, Weather and Economic & Political Cycles” in 2016

Get a heads up on weather, markets, economic and political cycles by tuning into ProfitProAG’s January 21st teleconference call that features Larry Acker.

There are many interacting factors that impact production agriculture and the outcome the grower receives in production and profitability. The more knowledge we acquire regarding these external influences, the better we can manage the profitability in our operation. We live in a global economy, so weather/market trends and economic/political cycles need to influence our management decisions short and long-term.

Larry Acker, a leading climatologist and marketing expert, will layout what’s ahead of us and provide insight into how to better manage through future trends and cycles.

The Teleconference is Thursday, January 21st from 8 to 9 pm (Central Time).
Call 1-855-212-0212, and then enter the meeting ID No. 769-100-082# (pound key). Just dial the number, listen and get your questions answered. Anonymity maintained. All calls will be muted when joining the teleconference. To ask a question press *6 (star six). After asking the question please press *6 again to re-mute your phone.

You are invited to ProfitProAG’s

2016 Winter Conference on February 11th & 12th.

Achieving Low Cost Production and Value-added Pricing

Learn how to grow nutrient-dense, high brix foods, tap into markets for these crops and improve your profitability! Simply put, demand drives production prices. Today, there are growing and expanding markets for high quality, nutrient-dense, high brix food. Other fast growing segments include non-GMO and organic markets. Food safety, label of origin, environmental concerns and regenerative farming practices are also factors that influence food production markets. Of course, the ultimate driver of demand is the consumer; they want quality, safe food with flavor. These factors dictate prices that consumers are willing to pay.

ProfitProAG offers opportunities to tap into these current and growing market segments to get more from every acre or animal. It starts with soil health as well as a short and long-term strategy to tap into these value-added food/feed markets. ProfitProAG calls these strategies the ProfitMaster Full-Circle System.

Soil health is the cornerstone of production agriculture for the crop grower, livestock producer or food processor. Participation in value-added production and markets is the key to maximizing more from every acre and animal.

The first key question is: “What determines soil health?”

The main characteristics of soil quality include high biodiversity, mineral retention/ balance/availability and stable bioactive carbon levels. Microbial diversity and a healthy soil food web are the main drivers of soil health.

The second key question is: “How can a high quality producing, yet low cost, soil system be built?”

The answer is quite simple—through plant diversity. Grow live plants on the soil year round, e.g., cover crops and companion crops, reduce soil disturbance as much as possible and satisfy the seasonal nutrition needs of the crop grown.

The third key question is: “Why can’t quality, nutrient-dense, high brix food for the value-added markets be provided?”

It can. Start with soil health and understand the seasonal dietary needs of the crop.

This conference has something for everyone (beginners through long-time producers).

The conference is located at 408 S. 1st Ave., Albert Lea, Minnesota

Livestock & Manure Management News

The Agronomic Value of Treated Livestock Manure

by David Widman, ProfitProAG Consultant

How is the monetary value of bioaugmented livestock manure figured when evaluating the benefits provided to commodity crops? What is the ROI – Return On Investment – from bioaugmented livestock manure? How can other benefits be put into monetary values? These questions are explained below along with guidance on enhancing the value of livestock manure by bioaugmentation.

The following scenario shows the economic benefit of bioaugmentedmanure.

As you can see from the above illustration, bioaugmented livestock manure provides a good Return on Investment. To cover the treatment costs, it only takes two bushels/A increase in yield. Other benefits that need to be given a monetary value are the nutrients and biology in the bioaugmented manure. The average current value of trace minerals sulfur, iron, manganese, copper and zinc from bioaugmented swine manure is $6.00 per 1,000 gallons or $18.00 per acre for a 3,000 gallon application. Along with the average current value for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium for a 3,000 gallon application, there is another $100.00 per acre, which makes the total $118.00 per acre. This is what you would have to spend to get the same nutrients from commercial fertilizer and the cost to produce this is less than $7.25.

The benefit of added biology and organic matter being applied to the soil is a huge benefit that is not available with commercial fertilizer. Biology is the best transfer method as it has started breaking down the manure into more plant available forms and works with the soil biology ecosystem. Salts are reduced, nutrients are in a stable form (a microbe) and are better adapted to staying in the soil where the nutrients are needed.

What is the current value for manure biology? Since there is no readily available market, it’s not easy to put a value on the biology. The best estimate is to look at current biological products. For example, the typical cost of a biological product is approximately $10/A and has a limited number of species of microbes. Bioaugmented livestock manure would have significantly more biology and is applied at a higher rate.

Sustainable agricultural practices work with the natural biological system so the biology does the job it was designed to do. Treating livestock manure with Microbial Manure MasterTM, Manure Master PlusTM and Manure ConditionerTM are economical ways to enhance the agronomic value of livestock manure.
